Questions about the Game Setting and Monsters

I am going thru ALL my monster books that I own right now and plan to put together a small PDF of Shadows of Esteren "inspired" creatures. I have some selected from my Ravenloft 2E set of monsters as well as some Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay "inspired" creations. Other monsters from games such as Mayfair Chill, Call of Cthulhu (duh) and a few other non-gaming sources...

If its alright, could I post a few for the community when I finish them.

Promising! I don't know much about monsters from Ravenloft and Mayfair Chill, so it'll be doubly interesting for me to have a look at what you'll dig up.

By the way, to you plan to make a catalogue, with simply images, or will you go as far as making full-fledged monster sheets, with background elements and characteristics?

In my opinion, the greatest Bestiary that has ever been created was the Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 2E "Old World Bestiary"

I loved how they pulled that off. The beginning of the book were commentaries from scholars and citizens on of the Old World. A brilliant amount of fluff. The back of the book was solid crunch.

Because Shadows of Esteren is a story driven game, I was thinking about writing a story for each monster with a basic description written into the story itself. Then the crunch at the very bottom.

My first attempt will be of this creature. I have written a rough draft tonight and will be editted by my wife later. I will prolly have something, hopefully good, to post Sunday.

They just creep me the heck out. As far as images, I plan on using images I find on google. I cannot draw to save my life. My only saving grace in gaming is my love to creatively scare the hell out of players.

I am also a fan of Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2E's Monstrous Compendiums. I love the one monster per page approach. This makes it very easy for GL/GM/DM's to reference the creature while in game. Flipping thru a book totally wrecks the atmosphere.

Definitely looking forward to seeing what you come up with. Kolbold Quarterly did a bestiary for the Age system that had a nice monster-a-page style with some story/flavour text included for each. I found it very useful for my Dragon Age game!

Welcome to the forums TJ.

I will miss Kobold Quarterly. It was a fun magazine with a lot of potential. It was my new Dragon/Dungeon Magazine. I miss those too. I dislike what it has become. Hopefully Gygax Magazine will able to fill its shoes.

I love this book and I think it's a reference too. I can even say that it is one of our major sources of inspiration for how we design bestiaries in Esteren! It's really well-made, with descriptions ranging from a sorcerer to a farmer's, and it truly goes beyond simply being a catalogue of monsters.

Wendigos sure are mighty scary! You will certainly be able to find horrific images that will neatly illustrate how you intend this creature to be in the context of Shadows of Esteren.
