I figured after making a nuisance of myself to Clovis this morning, I should properly say hi :)

I'm another UK based gamer, up in Edinburgh. A friend in our local gaming club backed Esteren in the last KS and seeing all his rewards come in recently along with the coverage on Grognard Games convinced me this is a game to dive into. As with most Edinburgh natives, I am in hiding from the Festival for the month of August and from the new students in September. Rather than do nothing, this year I am going to use that time to get to know the game so I can start running it in October when it is safe to come back out :)

I've never run a game with as serious and sinister a feel as SoE though I have experimented with making my Dragon Age games a little darker recently. Can't wait to chat to other GLs and improve my own style with their help! And brushing up on my French... rusty doesn't even begin to describe it right now

Ha ha, don't worry T.J. it was a pleasure to help you in any way I could!

Shadows of Esteren has indeed dark overtones, but it's not that grim and gritty in the end... it all depends on how you want it to be. You can make more light-hearted adventures to begin with if that's more your thing, then see if your players are in for more a more gothic and horrific atmosphere.

And don't worry, even if you don't feel able to speak French, many of the French members here can speak it understandably, so don't hesitate to mingle!
Allez, come on, allons-y, here we go, en avant, godspeed, hardi, let's do this!

I don't think getting the players to jump into darker games will be too hard - our club has a strong tradition of Call of Cthulhu etc. I'm still relatively new to the whole GL thing so I'm keen to push my comfort zone :)

When it comes to improving my French, just a few days on here and I feel more inspired to get better!

That's good to know! Call of Cthulhu is undoubtedly a good inspiration for Shadows of Esteren, and I have no doubt you and your Players will be able to have a great time together! ;)

Ah, a Croatian fan! Welcome to the International Esteren Community!

If you fancy the idea, don't hesitate to register on the World map of the Shadows army, it's always nice to see new locations pop up on the map!

Greetings,
My name is Robert. I live in California (near San Francisco). I have been playing RPGs for 30 years - most of which was various version of D&D, and on to Pathfinder RPG over the past 5 years. I've also played a number of other systems as well. Usually I am the di capo GM for our groups.

Recently I have fallen in love with The One Ring by Cubicle7 Entertainment.

I have always loved the "gothic horror" elements of games, the celtic horror notions of wicked fey, spirits, witches etc, and of course Cthulu. Ravenloft was always my favorite D&D setting (along w/ Planescape). And I love the narrative story-telling approach with rule-light, and heavy on theme and flavor that TOR is, and Esteren seems to be.

When I stumbled on the new kickstarter for this game, I immediately loved the sound of it, and dug deeper to read more. I am bummed that I missed the first Kickstarter last October.

I feel from what I read and from conversations with a few of The One Ring players on their messageboard that have played this does seem to pique my interest further. From what I can tell, Esteren seems to be a darker more horrific version of The One Ring - in it's playstle, rich in characters, story, narrations, theme, background, and mood. This may very well be what I'm looking for to compliment my other gaming, since Ravenloft does not play well w/ Pathfinder rules.

I have strongly been debating buying in (heavily) to the Kickstarter. Sadly the $320.00 packages are all sold, and that was the one I would have wanted. I'm eyeballing the $210.00 vs 250.00 at this point. I need a little convincing I guess that this game will have continued support and is worth the cost.

The biggest difference of the two packages are the $210.00 gets book 0 and 2 in Special Edition (but no #1), and the $250.00 gets all three books in Standard. I have found that I can buy book 1 on Amazon for $38 and I want the Special box and edition so I may got with the $210.00 and just buy the Book 1. One question though: if I did that I would miss out on "MAP OF TRI-KAZEL" which is only with the $250.00 Can someone please let me know a little about what the significance of that map is to see if I can go without and if it's available elsewhere.

Again I'm not convinced that this is what I'm looking for, but perhaps someone can convince me. I'm going to download the PDF of book 0 and read through it so that I can get a better understanding of it this weekend, and then make a decision to buy in or not.

If anyone one here is a fan of The One Ring and/or Ravenloft and can compare the games for me that may help tremendously - as it appears as if the presentation and playstyle of the game is similar to The One Ring (although I know the mood and genre is different)

Thanks,
Robert

For the technical details & costs I'm afraid my english is not good enough to give you a clear & complete answer... You should ask our translator, Clovis ;)

Looking to the existent PDF and especialy book 0 is, to my opinion, the best thing to do, you may form your impression and make a decision. You also can ask on Kickstarter the backers who already backed for Book 1 and 0 to have their impression as Players & Game Leader ;)

I'm sorry, I don't know well enough The One Ring to help you on this aspect...

For the Ravenloft aspect, I didn't play it neither, but read on this forum that many ancient Game Leader on this universe were satisfiyed with the horror, mist, monsters, mysteries... :)

Hope it could help you a little bit...

Morning all, i'll start in the english side with the introduction, apologies but I am a monoglot so won't be on the french side much.

I'm Robert, UK resident and I found Shadows at a con in Birmingham earlier this year, a friend bought the Universe book and we've been reading the basics slowly, love the setting.

Came to the forum looking for an editable and saveable version of the character sheet in english, didn't find one so I took the pages from the basic into Adobe9Pro and made one : ) Don't know the protocol for posting something like that here, am I allowed?

Anyways, hi all, and looking forward to more from Esteren

Hello & Welcome Outlandbase !

I'm glad you liked the universe you discovered thanks to your friend ! :)

You are allowed to open conversation subject, it isn't a problem at all ! It's alright for the character sheet... Most of these Game Aids are normaly in the Secret Section, under Section "Game Aid", that's maybe the reason why you didn't find them ?...

If you become a Game Leader, you may be interested in discovering this section. You just have to write to "Esteren" and ask for it.

Have a nice reading ! :D

Hey Robert, nice to see another UK gamer. When you say you saw the game in Birmingham, was it at the Uk Games Expo? I'm considering going next year, I'd love to hear your experience of it :)
