As I said it's a bit of a stretch but there are a number of elements that make me think of Esteren:Dragoslav a écrit :Can you explain more why you recommend this one? I didn't pay much attention to it when I watched it, so I'm interested to know what about it gives you an Esteren feeling.Glass a écrit : I would also say Andreï Rublev (the 3h long russian epic)
- the grim medieval setting (the mud, the cold, the illiterate people, the violence)
- the travelling monks/struggling artists
- the crazy naked cult
I don't know. It stirs my imagination I guess... and the stark reality in the movie really contrasts with the idealized, sometimes pastoral, illustrations and descriptions of Esteren.
I really don't know.
That being said, it's a really long movie in black and white with subtitles and there's also some violent scenes... so it's definitely not for everybody.

Re: Esteren movies database
Actually, Black Death is really the best "esteren" movie ive seen so far. The whole story could be a nice scenario btw. I sugest you all watch it.
Sleepy Hollow, as suggested in the book, is really a nice movie, but not so inspiring to the scenario as Black Death.
Also, avoid Witchville. The story is awful and completly forced. Do not waste your time.

Re: Esteren movies database
You are right Victor, Black Death is a great inspiration and I guess someone in the French community have done the adaptation for a Esteren scenario... We have to check that.
About Sleepy Hollow, Ichabod Crane was the main inspiration for the character Finn : read well and you will find some clues like the insect phobia
The really good inspiration is about the gothic and romantic mood, the investigation, what is real and what is only lore.. but I agree this not very dark : but we also laugh in Shadows of Esteren, isn't it ?
And sorry for my terrible english all

In the same category as the 13th warrior, I would add the Beowulf of Robert Zemeckis to the list...

The movie is a little bit too epic, but if you read between the lines, there are great concepts for Esteren in this version of the famous legend :
- fall of a hero : the man behind the legend
- the monsters (feondas?) which are the incarnations of the faults of men
- The "seducive feonda" (Angelina Jolie...^^)
- the ancestral blade without powers
- the magical item which is a trap (the golden horn in the movie)
And to be complete, I also must mention the Beowulf with Gerard Butler, which is also interesting because it presents the most human, "realistic" (= without surnatural and epic dimension) and psychologic version of the poem.

For a siege scenario, the film "Ironclad" could also be a great inspiration!

I just saw "Wolfhound".
It's a 2006 Russian movie (not a masterpiece imho) with a setting that reminds Taol-kaer landscapes.

New serial "Vikings" shows good example of osag culture.
I use it as inspiration for my new osag campaign.

Book is much better than movie. And I think setting in Wolfhound too Slavic for Esteren. It's a 2006 Russian movie (not a masterpiece imho) with a setting that reminds Taol-kaer landscapes.
The Leader should not hesitate to slaughter the PCs at the slightest mistake in order to instil a heavy, horrific atmosphere

The fiancee and I love Vikings, and yes, I got a very "Esteren" feeling during the very first episode and have been examining it for inspiration ever since.
