Can I ask how much experience you award as GMs? I know the book says 1-15 but is that per session or adventure? I've held off awarding any until the end of Loch Varn and would appreciate your input.

There is no defined answer on the subject, but for me, the numbers indicated in the "Experience and Advancement" chapter apply for a session: if a scenario is particularly long and complicated, and takes several game sessions for the Players to go through, then it makes sense that they are awarded experience for each one of these sessions.

However, keep in mind that I am talking about a "standard" game session, which means one taking between 4 and 6 hours of playtime. If you organize shorter or longer sessions, feel free to adjust the xp rewards accordingly.

For example, if I remember correctly, your two Loch Varn sessions have lasted 3 hours each so far. If the third and final one takes another 3 hours as well, then that would make for a total of 9 hours. I think what I would do is give the player a little more than the sums indicated, due to the fact that the total time amounted to more than a regular game session. Therefore, instead of 10xps, I would give 13 or 14.

Still, feel free to do as you feel is right, according to how important you think the scenario was for the Characters, and how fast you want them to progress.

Hope that helped! And as usual, don't hesitate to make it known if I wasn't clear or if my answer raised other questions.

Hello !

As I play on forum, the experience system that includes roleplay cannot easily be used, that's why I use another variant :

  • Common points = for every "scene"
    • 1 XP for a calm scene
    • 2 XP when there is some stress (psychological or physical)
    • 3 XP for a very dangerous and stressy scene
  • Personnal point = for the actions
    • Same scale (1, 2, 3 XP)
    • Psychology = personnal developpement, revelation, ...
    • Relationship = effort in order to know someone, hate or love or friendship
    • Confrontation = important action / personnal decision...
This system is a little bit more generous than the normal one... but I think it's OK :)

The wording used in Book 1 is "after each adventure," which is how I'm planning to do it, at least at first. If the adventures run multiple sessions, then what I'd do would be to boost the amount of XP that they receive at the resolution of the adventure.

Well, I tend myself to give an amount of xp to all my players. This is the common experience. After I reserve some other point on particular situation like : they pass this scene without killing X => 1 Xp, they take the hardest way to pass => +1 xp, etc.

At last I give some reward point for immersion and roleplay. The more pleasant the session was, the more am I generous.

Thanks that is really helpful! I think they are going to get 30 co for loch Varn since it took them 9 hours. I'm sure they will complain about it.

30xp is very generous. It's twice as much as I would probably give. However, it's up to you to set how fast you want your Players' Characters to advance.

I thought a session was 1-15? And the whole scenario was about 2 sessions?

I want to give them a good amount to make hem happy but not over reward them.

I give Xp for the whole adventure : a common amount and some bonuses if they validate some steps or have made a good roleplay.

A good score seems to be 3-5xp per scene of the adventure so a canvas give 3-6xp and a standard adventure 10-15xp. After if the story is particulary dangerous give more but xp should go in sense of the action in game and not only be a reward. A passive player should receive less xp than an other wich participate to all the actions.

Well, as I have mentioned, in my opinion, the standard duration for a game session is about 6 hours, so in your case, three sessions of three hours each would be roughly equivalent to one standard session and a half. Hence the fact that 30 xp seems like a lot to me.

If all of them have performed well according to all three of the criteria for xp attribution, it should make 4 + 4 + 4 = 12xp --> x1,5 = 18xp. Something like that.

That's how I consider things (by the way, I hope I'm being clear), although once more, it remains my own way of calculating the amounts distributed, and not the "official" way of doing it.
