Music at the Table

I've never been a GM that used music but having read through some of the SoE stuff, I'm thinking of trying it out when I run a short campaign in October/November. I know the recommendations given in the books and have a copy of 'Of Men and Obscurities' as an add on for my kickstarter pledge but I wanted to know what other music GLs have used in their SoE games. And, what sort of scene do you see the song being a backing for e.g. horror, suspense, climactic battle

I think the best think I can do is redirect you to this thread on the French section of the forum, where many members of the community have already shared ideas about which tracks to use during a game to enhance the atmosphere. And even if you don't speak French, that's not an issue: music is a universal language! ;)

I hope it will help you find what you are looking for. Don't hesitate to post your own suggestions here or on the French thread!

That's perfect! Even with my pigeon French, I can understand most of it :)

I was pleased when I first saw a track from the Silent Hill 2 soundtrack suggested for the Loch Varn scenario. I use a great deal of the tracks from both the Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 3 soundtracks for various general moods and settings in my games, since the music is varied enough to suit creepy wilderness locations or more urban settings.

I also really like the soundtrack from the film The Last of the Mohicans. It has a very folksy quality to it that suits most of the rural or wilderness locations in Tri-Kazel, and some of the tracks work very well with tense combat encounters. I use it most often during sequences of extended overland travel. Here's one of the best tracks: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yB6S3c7f8XA

Another soundtrack I have started using is from the game Dragon Age 2.
Here's a good one for potentially lethal encounters with horrifying creatures: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOyX2Z7FBKE
And here's one for those emotional moments during times of repose: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dSCq7jTL7tQ

I have an Esteren playlist divided into numerous sub-playlists. Then I carefully select songs to put in each playlist so that, depending on the scene, I can just turn on "shuffle" and "repeat" and let the playlist run during the scene. I will at times play a specific song that I had picked out beforehand, but I try not to do that too much because it slows things down.

Yeah I think several sub-lists are probably going to be the way to go, I don't want players to get too bored with the same thing playing on loop for 30 mins :) Thanks for the LOTM recommendation, will check that out.

I have to admit that I struggle to listen to anything that purports to be Celtic, a combination of living in Scotland and working in tourism means that it has lost its shine somewhat for me!

Very Helpful for ambient:
- Temple Of Elemental Evil Soundtrack
- Call Of Cthulhu - Dark Corners of the Earth Soundtrack
- Drawn 1,2 & 3 soundtrack
- Adrian Von Ziegler - Wanderer

I have more...but for now this popped into my mind :D

I would recomend David Arkenstone. He got some exelent celtic middel age inspired music that works very well with the SoE setting.

Basically the entire score to Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 is perfect for SoE.

Come on, tell me I'm wrong: http://youtu.be/xylCAHESB1s, http://youtu.be/Tl6EOU8Qxu0

I've lived this score since I first heard it. The movie not so much...
