In regular games that looks like TV serials I give at following rate:

danger:
1. not ricking at all
2. some scars.
3. normal session (1 or 2 combats)
4. many combats or mental stresses
5. heroes was knocking on the death door (and possibly twice).

roleplay
1. player was brutally ruins atmosphere or didn't roleplaying character.
2. player have once or twice fault in roleplaying hit qualities ways and so on
3. normal roleplay
4. player was good and often roleplaying his quirks
5. player was roleplaying even if it was putting his character in danger

progress
1. players didn't complete scenario at all
2. players try as best as they can but fault.
3. players finish scenario but I was not as Leader happy
4. players complete scenario but have some problems (miss most scenes or so on)
5. players complete scenario with success.
The Leader should not hesitate to slaughter the PCs at the slightest mistake in order to instil a heavy, horrific atmosphere

This chart make sense to me. About the progress part I tend to fix some xp at some checkpoints. If they do not they don't receave the xp.

I'd also tend to agree with such a chart as a whole. However, regarding the "danger" part (which is measured as "Confrontation" in the book), I personally not only gauge how dangerous the fights were, but also how relevant to the plot they were, and also how well the Players fared. If one or several of the PCs end up severely wounded just because they blindly charged into dangerous situations, then I consider that does not deserve a reward in XPs.

I tend to give the same experience to all players as well. I think for individual acheivements I may give an extra survival point here and there for free, especially if I am particularly nasty to one player for plot purposes.

Handing out a whole Survival Point, I wouldn't do. After all, sh*t happens, and if a Player had to use (or simply chose to use) a Survival Point because he was in a tight spot, well, tough luck. However, what I am prone to do is give between 1 and 3 additional experience points to a Player that had a particularly rough time, whether because of sucky dice results or because he always was at the wrong place at the wrong time. This way, I give a little compensation for the fact that he probably had to use one or several Survival Points.

Well I wouldn't hand them out like candy if that was what you were thinking I meant. :) I won't do anything at first. I need to run the game for a while before I start making changes. I am looking forward to the first game, though. I still need to get about three more characters created and we will be ready to go.

Nah don't worry, that's not what I implied!

If you have any issues or questions about Shadows of Esteren as a whole, or simply feel in need of advice for GMing Esteren, don't hesitate to ask; the good folks on the forum will most probably be very disposed to help!

One question on spending experience at character generation.

The way I read it was it was 10 exp for every dot of domain up to the 5 dots. From that point on it is 25 experience for each "dot" of discipline within that domain. Limited to two disciplines at character generation with only one "dot" allocated to each of the disciplines max.

Is that correct?
