Powers: scale and area of effect

Can someone clarify how Scale translates into area of effect for me? (Emphases added.)

On p.247, under Targets, the example says that a power of the fourth Circle is needed to affect people within 100yds radius of one another.

On the same page, under Scale, we get the explanation: "The range of a power determines the maximum distance between the Demorthèn and the spot where the power is summoned. The area of effect is always calculated as the diameter of the circle and spreads from the spot where a power is summoned. Thus, a power of the third Circle can affect a spot distant from 50 yd at most, and within a radius of 50 yd."

A couple of things confuse me here. First, the first example has the area as the radius, but here it's said to be the diameter and not the radius, and then it's the radius again. (In the example on p.249, it's diameter.)

Second, if I can summon a power 50 yds away, which has a diameter/radius of 50 yds, then the outermost edge of the effect is 75/100 yds away in total (depending on whether it's diameter or radius): 50 yds to the epicentre of the area, plus the area itself. But the description says it affects a spot 50 yds away at most.

Thanks in advance for any help. :)

Thanks for posting this Ovid ... I had the same question.

Hello gentlemen,

The confusion results from a stupid mistake during the translation: both occurrences of "radius" should actually read "diameter". This is going in my personal Errata!

Now, as for your second problem, I would say that your interpretation of the rules is correct: you can summon a power of the Third Circle at a distance of 50 yd, and the area of effect of the power will then be a circle with a diameter of 50 yd, which indeed results in a maximum range of 75 yd.

Therefore, for example, a Demorthèn who summons Stone Arrow at the Third Circle can strike an enemy who is 70 yd away from him, by summoning the power 50 yd away and extending the area of effect of the power to its maximum range. However, he should be careful of what he does: if the Demorthèn's friends are in the middle of a close combat fight with the aforementioned enemy, they're in for nasty collateral damage!
