Any Alternate Rule systems anyone would suggest?

I have to say, Burning Wheel is kind of great for SoE for different reason.

Wounds and Combat are still pretty dangerous.
Low fantasy works great in BW as a system, character generation only has to have minor alterations, since its medival setting fits great. (Just cut out non-humans and tinker with the academics to have Magience in it)
Horror/Insanity could be intruduced to humans as a emotional attribute alike Great/Grief and you have your Steel attribute to test the nerves of the characters on the spot.
And at last, the believe system works really great in a character driven rpg, where believes about the world clash in so fundamental ways as in SoE World of Faith/Magience and Nature.

But on the other hand, Burning Wheel is really complex if you want to engage all mechanisms and takes a time to learn, which takes away from the "game to the background" approach which SoE kind of has. But on the other hand, it engages more rollplay elements in its mechanics.

i agree Arthus : Brigandyne would be the best choice.

Despite the fact there's no english translation, you could consider Zweihander as a similar candidate
